Situational Parenting
Published in Hardcover by Leadership Studies (15 December, 1999)
Average review score:

The best "how to" parent book ever!I'm was so sick of theories and cheerleading and attitudinal approaches to parenting that I could scream! This is, hands down, the best book and parenting I have ever read. Situational Parenting picks up where Paul Hersey's Situational Leadership leaves off. It helped me to understand the "how to" and just as important, the "timing" of being a successful and caring parent. This book helped me to turn around a very rocky relationship with my daughter in two weeks. $10,000 in therapy couldn't come close to the help I found here. God bless Paul Hersey and Ron Campbell!

Six Creepy Sheep
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (August, 1992)
Average review score:

Six Creepy Sheep go a-haunting on HalloweenI do not think of sheep as being particulary creepy, but that is just one of the charms of "Six Creepy Sheep," in which the six previously sleepy sheep are awake enough to decide to go trick or treating on a spooky Halloween night. John O'Brien was always one of my favorite contributors to "The New Yorker" and it is delightful to see him going all out in these illustrations as the six creepy sheep go a-haunting. But as they venture into the woods they meet a passel of pirates, a gaggle of goblins, and more, with each encounter sending one of the sheep scuryying away. Judith Ross Enderle and Stephanie Gordon Tessler come up with some tongue twisting prose for this cute little counting book, but it is O'Brien's detailed pen-and-ink illustrations that make this a winner for me.

Six Snowy Sheep
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (October, 1994)
Average review score:

Six Snowy SheepI originally bought this book for my five yr. old but my one yr. old quickly made it his own. The dry humor and brevity of this book make it an extremely enjoyable read for kids. I'm just glad I can re-order one since our current copy is in shreds from so much use. What a great book!

Social Prisms : Reflections on Everyday Myths and Paradoxes
Published in Paperback by Pine Forge Press (January, 1999)
Average review score:

A must-read book. This book is brilliantly written. It intrigues, stimulates, and provokes thought about the social paradoxes and contradictions in our world. Jodi O'Brien does a superb job in using examples drawn from popular culture to engage the reader and expose the complexities of contemporary social life. This book is written in everyday language and is easy to read and understand. It's not just for the college student, but also for the lay person who desires to peer through the prism. I was surprised at what I saw. This book is a life-learning experience all on its own.

Sociology Readings: Exploring Architecture of Everyday Life
Published in Paperback by Pine Forge Press (15 June, 2002)
Average review score:

Believe it or not, an ENJOYABLE textbook!Simply excellent. Although it's a college textbook, it's easy to read and enjoyable. I found myself nearly finished with the book before the semester was half over! As Newman intended, the book has a relaxed tone and all of the chapters are tied together with a consistent theme. I now understand sociological theories and ideas--phenomena that I never thought were relevant to everyday life.

Spirituality in Nursing: Standing on Holy Ground
Published in Paperback by Jones & Bartlett Pub (15 January, 1999)
Average review score:

Ground breaking workFrom the beginning of nursing the movement has always been about more than just handing out pills, taking temperatures, and following the doctor's orders. From the beginning nurses have been charged with the spiritual life of a patient--how the patient is doing in spirit and mind as well as body. In her seminal work "Standing on Holy Ground," O'Brien manages to touch all the important bases, starting with a spiritual history of nursing and quickly moving on to nursing assessment of spiritual needs. The last two-thirds of the book is devoted to a delineation of the spiritual needs of folks in various life stages--from acute illness to death and dying. This book is fast becoming a solid anchor and reference for our parish health and wellness team.

Stand With Christ: Why Missionaries Can't Sign the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message
Published in Paperback by Smyth & Helwys Pub (01 November, 2002)
Average review score:

Insightful Book. The book is a short compilation of essays on why missionaries shouldn't sign the 2000 BFM. This is a biased work definitely siding with those who disagree with the fundamentalist leadership and current direction of the SBC. I found the essays interesting and helped me see the greater controversy brewing in the SBC. The views expressed are more out of concern then judgment of other brothers and sisters in the faith. They want the reader to know why they are disagreeing with the leadership. I wouldn't call this book heresy or written by simple-minded liberals either. The authors have had positions of authority in missions and have experience on the mission field. Just because we disagree at times doesn't mean we should persecute our brothers in faith.
If you want to know why there is so much fuss about these folks over doctrinal issues and creeds then I recommend this book.

Steam, Smoke and Steel: Back in Time With Trains
Published in Hardcover by Charlesbridge Publishing (July, 2000)
Average review score:

Trains,Trains,TrainsI checked this book out at the library, and now have to purchase it for a nephew who loves trains. It is a great book that details the history of trains, but adds in a story (a family with many generations working on the trains) to keep the interest of children. Beautiful illustrations with a cat on every page my kids had to find.
